Recent data from the Education Bureau reveals a staggering statistic: over 130 students have taken their own lives in the past five years, alarming parents and raising serious concerns about mental health support in schools. Legislative Council member Luk Chung-hung has questioned the rising numbers of student suicides and attempted cases, particularly among those with special educational needs or mental health issues.
In response, the government introduced a “three-tier emergency mechanism” in December 2023 to facilitate the early identification of at-risk students and provide appropriate support. Secretary Choi emphasized the complexity of the causes of suicide, including mental health issues, interpersonal relationships, and academic pressures. Despite calls for more school social workers, there are currently no plans for additional permanent positions. Schools can utilize existing funds to purchase additional counseling services. The Secretary for Education reinforces our belief that early intervention is key.
