A recent study from the University of Hong Kong reveals that individuals with depression face double the risk of death and a tenfold increase in suicide rates compared to non-depressed individuals. Analyzing data from over 10 million people globally, the research emphasizes that timely and effective treatment can significantly reduce these risks by up to 30%.
Professor Zhang Yingzong, who led the study, stresses that depression is not merely an emotional disorder but a critical public health issue associated with significant health risks. Early intervention is vital, especially within the first 180 days of diagnosis, when the mortality risk is eleven times higher than that of non-depressed individuals.
These findings underscore the importance of raising awareness about depression and promoting early identification and treatment. With over 332 million people affected worldwide, it is imperative for healthcare professionals and society to prioritize mental health support.
At AniTech, we are dedicated to advancing innovative solutions through our AI-EEG screening platform for depression, facilitating early detection and intervention, not just in Hong Kong, but globally.
