Ataxia is a term for a group of disorders that affect co-ordination, balance and speech. Any part of the body can be affected, but people with ataxia often have difficulties with:
- Balance and walking
- Speaking
- Swallowing
- Tasks that require a high degree of control
- Vision
Mouse model for ataxia is the most commonly used model for the studying of ataxia. Ataxic mutant mice can be used to represent models of cerebellar degenerative disorders. They can be used for investigation of cerebellar function, pathogenesis of degenerative processes as well as of therapeutic approaches.
